Some keys to hanging artwork in your home
To turn your walls into an art gallery, whether family portraits, prints, or oils, there are a few factors you should keep in mind.
Use hooks instead of nails
Instead of pounding a nail into your wall to hang a piece of artwork, consider using picture-hanging hooks, which are just as durable. Just make sure that you get the right type of hook for your artwork's weight. For example, a one-nail picture hook can hold something that is 30 pounds or lighter, according to Elle Decor. We like to use two hooks per piece of artwork for added security and to help keep the art level -- and don't forget to use your level!
Create a focal point
To draw attention to this wall decor, consider framing it to bring instant character to the room. One homeowner chose to use a dramatic gold frame, while this piece of art is surrounded by a wood-trim frame to draw attention to the photograph.
Hang it at eye level
When hanging a piece on the wall, it should be about 60 inches off the ground, which is approximately eye level for most people. If you're hanging it in your dining room, it should be hung slightly above eye level when you're sitting down at the dinner table.
Space pieces accordingly
If you're planning on hanging multiple items, they should be appropriately spaced. Generally, have two inches between larger pictures, and for smaller photos, use about an inch and a half. Make sure every piece is hung far away from other wall accessories like shelving or custom cabinets.
It's also a good idea to make a sketch of the wall and figure out your decorative plan before you begin hammering. Remember: measure twice, hammer once!
