Form Meets Function: Double-duty Desk
This terrific desk was created both as a work/play space for our daughter and as a Haas Cabinet display. It’s crafted from the Haas Capitol series Plymouth door in Rustic Cherry with a Saddle low-sheen finish and pewter-colored cup pulls, and was installed by Superior Renovations.
For display purposes, a few of the cabinets are manufactured in all-wood, while others are particleboard. We chose the simple lines and color of this cabinetry to complement our rustic farmhouse living room.
The top is a Sicillia Grey Leathered granite from Superior Marble & Granite in Sellersville, PA, that resembles soapstone: practically indestructible for our little girl to use now and grow into.
To exhibit different types of drawer glides and door hinges, we chose to fabricate this display with a mixture of King full-extension guides with soft close and Blum full-extension drawer guides. We added Bluemotion cup hinges as well. On another set of drawers, we opted for the standard full-extension guides.
Wondering about the different type of ends you can order on your cabinetry? We built in a sampling of replica-style integrated ends, flush finished ends and matching veneer ends. We also used double and single panel doors.
We modified the toe-kick to make this piece look more like furniture; most often, for ergonomics, you’ll see kitchen cabinets with a more indented toe kick, because you’re standing at the counter.
ShelfGenie installed two double-height glide-out shelves in this cabinet because, for now, this desk will store our daughter's games and toys. The double height allows them to have higher sides to hold larger items in place: a standard height glide-out would not accommodate the stacking of items without them falling off the sides. Depending on what is being stored, the drawers can be made even deeper, with added dividers for more sectioned storage, or sloped for a higher back end to protect items from tipping off the back. As the daughter’s toys, games and books change, so will the adjustable inserts.
